How to Generate a Gmail Reply With Thread Context
Use AGNURA’s Generate Reply in Gmail: load the conversation thread, steer with What I want to say, review the draft, insert manually, and send yourself.
You will be able to draft a Gmail reply from the open conversation thread, review it, insert it into compose, and send it yourself.
AGNURA AI Assistant adds Generate Reply on Gmail web compose. It can expand and scrape the thread, call managed AI with your reply prompt and optional knowledge base, then wait for you to Insert into reply. It never clicks Send for you.
This is for replies and follow-ups inside Gmail. First outreach from a website is a different path: How to Personalize an Outreach Email From Website Research. Hub: Research-to-Email Outreach: From Website Context to a Reviewed Gmail Draft.
Prerequisites
- Desktop Chrome, signed into Gmail in the same profile as AGNURA
- AGNURA installed; Activate Gmail on (Settings → General; default on for new installs)
- Signed in to AGNURA with AI credits remaining
- Non-empty Reply prompt under Settings → Email Prompts (a default is seeded)
- Optional: Knowledge base text in General settings for facts about you/your offer
- A Gmail compose or reply window open (full-page or inline)
Refresh the Gmail tab after changing Activate Gmail if the menu does not appear.
Direct answer
- Open Reply (or compose) on the thread in Gmail.
- Open AGNURA AI → Generate Reply.
- Wait for Original email / thread to load (or Edit and paste).
- Optional: fill What I want to say.
- Click Generate Reply, edit the result, then Insert into reply.
- Review in Gmail and click Send yourself.
Exact steps
1. Open the right Gmail compose
- Open the conversation in Gmail.
- Click Reply (or open a compose window tied to that thread).
- Confirm the AGNURA AI control appears near the compose toolbar (before Gmail’s More options ⋮).
If the icon is missing: confirm you are on mail.google.com, Activate Gmail is on, and the tab was refreshed after install or toggle changes. See AGNURA Not Showing or Not Generating: Troubleshooting.
2. Open Generate Reply
- Click the AGNURA AI icon.
- Choose Generate Reply.
An in-page modal opens. It does not send anything to managed AI until you click Generate Reply inside the modal.
3. Confirm the thread context
The modal includes:
| Field | Role |
|---|---|
| Reply prompt | Your standing instructions (from Email Prompts). Expand or Edit for this run only if needed. |
| Original email / thread | Auto-loaded conversation text after AGNURA tries Expand all / expands collapsed messages, then scrapes the thread. |
| What I want to say | Optional one-run note (not saved to Settings). Use it to steer this reply’s angle. |
Status may show that the conversation is expanding. When loading finishes, skim the thread field.
| Outcome | What to do |
|---|---|
| Thread looks complete | Continue |
| Thread empty or truncated | Use Edit on Original email / thread and paste the parts you need |
| Wrong messages | Edit the text before you generate |
Thread loading is best-effort against Gmail’s DOM. Collapsed or lazily loaded messages may need Expand all or a paste.
4. Generate the draft
- Click Generate Reply in the modal (primary button above the result area).
- Wait for Generated reply to appear (it stays hidden until success).
- Edit the draft in the modal before insert.
What managed AI receives for this action:
- Your reply prompt (modal or Settings default)
- Optional What I want to say
- Shared knowledge base (or none)
- The Original email / thread text
The model is steered to write as you (the account owner). Lines labeled like From: You are treated as your prior messages. If you sent the last message, the draft should behave like a follow-up, not pretend they already replied. If they spoke last, it should answer that message.
5. Insert, then send yourself
- Click Insert into reply to place the text in the compose body (or Copy Reply for the clipboard).
- Read the full Gmail draft, including quoted history below.
- Fix tone, facts, and promises.
- Click Send in Gmail only when you approve.
Insert is manual. Generate does not auto-insert or auto-send.
What success looks like
| Check | Expected |
|---|---|
| Menu | AGNURA AI visible on compose |
| Context | Thread field has the conversation (or your paste) |
| Draft | Appears only after a successful generate |
| Insert | Text lands in compose when you choose Insert |
| Send | You click Send in Gmail |
Common failures and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| No AGNURA AI icon | Activate Gmail on; refresh mail.google.com; confirm install |
| Generate fails / no key | Sign in and check credits at app.agnura.com; check billing/access for that model |
| Empty reply prompt | Set Reply prompt under Email Prompts and Save |
| Thread did not load | Expand the thread in Gmail; Edit and paste conversation text |
| Draft answers as the other person | Regenerate; ensure thread labels look right; edit heavily before send |
| Draft ignores your point | Fill What I want to say; regenerate |
| Want wording polish only | Use Rewrite Message instead (draft-focused; not this guide’s full thread path) |
When to escalate to human judgment
- Legal, pricing, or commitment language appears in the draft
- The thread includes confidential third-party data you should not send to managed AI
- Tone is high-stakes (escalation, complaint, executive thread)
- You cannot verify a fact the model added
In those cases, write more of the reply yourself or shorten the context you send.
How AGNURA helps this job
| Need | With AGNURA |
|---|---|
| Load thread context in Gmail | Best-effort Expand all + scrape into the modal |
| Steer one reply | What I want to say + editable reply prompt |
| Keep standing facts handy | Optional knowledge base |
| Stay in control | Manual Insert; you Send |
Compared with common alternatives
| Approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|
| Copy thread into a chatbot tab | Works; more paste friction |
| Rewrite Message only | Faster polish; does not reload thread/KB by design |
| Full Gmail API assistants | Different permission and product model |
| AGNURA Generate Reply | Same-tab thread load + review/insert on Gmail web |
Privacy note: when you click Generate, prompts, knowledge base, and thread text go to AGNURA managed AI (credits). See AGNURA Privacy in Plain Language and Local Settings vs Local AI: The Privacy Difference.
