Title Tags and Meta Descriptions: Practical Length and Intent Checks
How to check title tags and meta descriptions for intent and length: AGNURA’s 30–60 and 70–160 heuristics, SERP preview truncation, and why length is not a ranking rule.
You will be able to check a page’s title tag and meta description for clear intent first, then use length bands as display heuristics, not as Google ranking rules.
AGNURA AI Assistant flags missing titles/metas as High and short/long lengths as Medium in SEO Analysis. Those bands are tool guidelines. Google may rewrite titles and choose snippets. Primary references: Title links, Snippets.

When this applies
- You are publishing or refreshing one URL
- An audit flagged
title-short,title-long,meta-short,meta-long, or missing title/meta - You want click-worthy SERP text without treating character counts as ranking law
Prerequisites
- The live page open in Chrome (wait for JS-heavy pages to finish loading)
- Access to edit
<title>andmeta name="description", or a note for whoever can - Optional: AGNURA installed (Run and Export an AGNURA SEO Analysis)
Direct answer
- Write what the page is for in plain words (intent).
- Put that idea in a unique title; support it in the meta description.
- Check that both tags exist (missing is the real blocker).
- Use length bands only to reduce ugly truncation in previews.
- Re-run the audit and skim the SERP preview.
- Stop when intent is clear, even if the number is not “perfect.”
Step-by-step
1. State the page intent in one sentence
Before you count characters, answer: “What should a searcher expect if they click?”
Example intents:
| Page type | Intent line |
|---|---|
| Product | What it is + who it is for |
| Guide | What the reader will learn |
| Local service | Service + place when relevant |
| Category | What the collection covers |
Expected result: One sentence you could defend to a teammate.
2. Draft the title for humans first
A good title:
- Names the page topic
- Differs from other URLs on the site
- Matches the visible H1 closely enough that users are not surprised
- Avoids stuffing the same phrase three times
Missing <title> is a High issue in AGNURA. Fix that before you worry about length.
Expected result: A unique title string that matches the page.
3. Draft the meta description as a short pitch
A useful meta description:
- Summarizes the page in one or two short sentences
- Gives a reason to click (what you get, for whom)
- Stays honest; Google may ignore or rewrite it anyway
Missing meta description is also High in AGNURA. An empty meta is worse than a slightly long one.
Expected result: A clear summary, not keyword soup.
4. Apply AGNURA’s length heuristics (display aid only)
Current AGNURA checker bands (src/shared/seo-audit.ts):
| Field | “Looks good” band | Short flag | Long flag | Severity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Title | About 30–60 characters | title-short | title-long | Medium |
| Meta description | About 70–160 characters | meta-short | meta-long | Medium |
Passed checks may show as title-ok / meta OK when inside band.
Important: These are not ranking rules. Pixel width, device, and Google rewrites matter more than a hard character law. Treat flags as “preview may look clipped,” not “you will lose rankings.”
5. Read the SERP preview, not only the count
AGNURA’s report includes a Google-style SERP preview:
| Preview piece | Approximate truncation in AGNURA |
|---|---|
| Title line | ~60 characters |
| Description line | ~155 characters |
Note the small gap: the audit allows meta up to ~160, while the preview truncates near 155. A meta that “passes” length can still show an ellipsis in the preview. Prefer the preview eye test.
Expected result: You know what truncates and whether the first words still make sense.
6. Check intent alignment (title, H1, meta, body)
| Check | Pass looks like |
|---|---|
| Title vs H1 | Same topic; wording can differ slightly |
| Title vs URL | No bait-and-switch |
| Meta vs body | Claims appear on the page |
| Focus phrase (optional) | Appears naturally in title/H1 when you use a real phrase; AGNURA can also flag keyword placement separately |
Do not shrink a clear title to hit 60 if that removes the product name people need. Prefer clarity; then trim trailing brand fluff if the preview clips the useful part.
7. Fix, publish, re-run
- Update title and meta in the CMS or theme.
- Hard-refresh the live URL.
- Run AGNURA SEO Analysis again (or View Source to confirm tags).
- Confirm High missing-title/meta issues are gone.
- Accept Medium length flags only when the preview still reads well, or trim further.
Common failures and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
title-missing / meta-missing | Empty tags or SPA that never sets them | Set tags in HTML or framework head; re-check after load |
title-short | Brand-only title (“Acme”) | Add the page topic |
title-long | Title + every keyword + long brand | Keep topic first; move extra brand to the end or drop it |
meta-short | One vague clause | Add what the page offers and for whom |
meta-long | Paragraph pasted into meta | Cut to one tight pitch; watch the ~155 preview |
| Preview looks wrong but source looks fine | Cached HTML or client-rendered head | Wait for load; confirm final DOM title |
| Google shows a different title than yours | Google rewrote the title link | Improve on-page clarity; do not panic over character math alone |
Verification checklist
- Intent sentence written first
- Unique title present
- Meta description present
- Title and H1 agree on topic
- Meta claims match visible content
- SERP preview first words still make sense
- Length flags treated as heuristics, not ranking proof
- Audit re-run after publish
When to escalate
- Legal or regulated claims in the meta: get review before publish
- Many URLs share one title template: fix the template system, not one page only
- JS app never exposes a stable title: engineering ownership, not a character tweak
How AGNURA helps this job
| Step | Without AGNURA | With AGNURA |
|---|---|---|
| Spot missing title/meta | View Source / DevTools | High issues on the current page |
| Spot short/long bands | Manual count | Medium title-* / meta-* issues with current length |
| See truncation | Guess | SERP preview (~60 / ~155) |
| Score context | N/A | Length fails subtract Medium points; missing is High (How to Read an SEO Score Without Chasing 100) |
Compared with common alternatives
| Approach | Fit |
|---|---|
| Character counter only | Fast; easy to miss intent |
| Rank-tracking as the title test | Slow feedback; mixes many factors |
| Full-site crawler title reports | Scale across URLs; different job from one-tab fix |
| AGNURA on the active tab | Current-page rules + preview; not a ranking guarantee |
Limits (product-true)
- Length bands are display heuristics, not Google’s algorithm
- Pixel width and mobile SERPs are not fully simulated
- Google can rewrite titles and pick other snippet text
- Audit is current page (plus light origin probes elsewhere); not a full-site crawl
- SEO Analysis does not use managed AI for these checks
- A perfect length score does not mean the page will rank
